REPLY ON DIFFERENT WITH OUT A ROUTER OR ANY DEVICE

Posted by brillas , 01 September 2010 · 1 views

2 Computers on different Subnet can talk without a router.
BUT HOW ???????

eg.
172.16.0.1 255.255.255.0
172.16.0.1 255.255.0.0

they all give the same ending process
and they think they are on the the same SUBNET

GUYs IT WORKS LIKE MAGIC esp WITH DNS
FYI This is because routings basic task is the logical binary AND of the IP and the subnet mask to find the network address/range.  If an IP falls outside that range it sends it to its default gateway.

One important detail of note, if router links have incongruous subnet masks many problems can arise (for example, OSPF relationships will fail.  Also routing black-holes will appear is the attached subnet mask includes routes that are not truly directly-attached)
