Well it's pretty true but still a good choice if you don't want to take time to make your own and don't have strong requirements.

When you'll be a lil' more experienced,  you'll start with a minimum linux install and will add only the tools you need with the optimizations you need.

I can recomend something that I dont see everyday, I think honestly that you should create your own distro using the instructions from www.linuxfromscratch.org.
This way you will learn from the ground up what everything in your system does and why. I have done it 3 times, last time using their scripts to automate some of the functions.
It will take a couple of days but the instructions are very clear and complete.
In the end you will not regret the experience you recieved from it and if you are serius about becoming a pentester you need this knowledge anyway, so this will feel like a long way around but it is actually the opposite.

You may contact me for any reason if any help is needed.
Cheers

If you got time to learn the foundations I would follow @medborg4re advice to use LFS or using gentoo or archlinux as a base, this in order to get a deep understanding about linux internals, compiling, troubleshooting, etc, but not everyone got the time so Kali is a great choice, used by rookies & experts (having a distro with pre-packaged tools doesn't make you a noob, lack of skills to use these tools do), backed by OffSec gurus, you got almost all the tools you need, you can check the source code, you can add your own tools, being the most used is also well documented and has great community support.

You got other user friendly alternatives like Parrot Security (https://parrotsec.org) and BackBox (https://backbox.org)

Blackarch (https://blackarch.org) is also an amazing one, but perhaps could be considered as a distro for advanced users.

There are too many out there that you can check if you got the time - > http://distrowatch.com/search.php?category=Security

MY recommendation would be Kali, plus a Win VM for win tools
