Sorry for resurrection a zombie thread, but I'm kinda eyeballing the Threadripper refresh based on Zen+ that's due later this year.  I really want a 2P Epyc server with as much RAM as I can afford, but that's not in the cards right now ( I want to run two loaded out data center topologies, along with with vMX and IOS-XRv 9000 for the ISP connections).

Hi!

I would buy the latest DDR3 ECC supported server (dont bother DDR4 ECC, too expensive ) with dual socket CPU (e5-2690 v2) instead of the AMD ZEN:

I recommend ex: HP ML350p GEN8 with a lots of RAM (you can found very good prices on ebay).

Reasons:
-Stability/Software support
-Intel linux support is far better than AMD's support.
-You save a lots of money, performance almost the same.
