I have ISE/ACS VMWare image and want to try 802.1x (Dot1x) with the help of IOU.

Can this be done or not? If yes, what is the best image of IOU?

don't know if still need this but I don't think you need a real switch.
I arranged a lab using GNS3 + IOU + Windows Server 2012 NPS as Radius + Windows AD services and it works like a charm. I guess you can do the same with GNS3.. I used the cloud to connect the Servers running under Vmware but now you can use the native support of GNS3 to vmware.

Yes you can do it without using a real switch.

It worked fine for me when i needed.
IOU L2 ver 15.0 and 15.1 worked along with Windows 2012 for NPS and Microsoft AD and CA for certificates and authentication.

It's possible.  The hard part is figuring out how to bridge your VMs.  That's not a simple thing to answer because it depends on what is running where.  It is much easier with a machine with multiple ethernet interfaces and with a real switch.  You should always have at least one real switch.

Agree with you.
I had an on-board ethernet card and a PCI card with 2 ethernet ports.
That did the job.
I was even able to use 802.1x in a real switch that I connected to a Cloud in GNS3 and routed traffic towards.
