Hello,

I'm planning on getting a MCSA: Windows Server certification.

I was wondering if it would be better to start studying for Windows Server 2012 r2 and then take one single exam to upgrade my skills to Windows Server 2016, or skip the WS 2012 certification path.

Accordingly to my experience, the upgrade path to Windows Serve 2016 on enterprise environments will be slow, and the Windows Server 2012 certification will add the knowledge for a more widespread os.

Your valuable suggestions are welcomed.

If you are starting from scratch it might better to skip the 2012 path and go for the 2016 certs, just so you are more current.  You can still go through CBTS for 2012 and work with it so you are familiar with it.
In my case I just need one test to upgrade my 2k3 cert to 2012 (the 70-417) so I'm taking that pretty soon...then i'll see about getting the MCSE in 2012.

The 2016 is more recent and contains new features obviously. Otherwise you will have to learn and pass an additional exam or exams to "upgrade".

Here is my cheat sheet for study/exam path for 2016 (course on the left, exam number on the right):
