Passed AWS Associate Certified Solution Architect Exam Today

Recommended Posts

I have just finished AWS Associate - Exam and I can be proud - I passed AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate Exam. A couple of things from side:

I used the following material to prepare:

- My previous work experience - not much related to AWS Cloud Environment,

- CBT Nuggets for AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate - quite OK,

- AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate - Exam Prep App from AppStore - it is very good to get the feeling of the exam and as far as I can tell it is the only one that I have found,

- Couple of White Papers from Amazon regarding AWS Cloud Technology.

Hi Anilia, congrats!

Do you think the CBT Nuggets course is enough to learn and prepare, or do you think something like the

one is necessary? I don't think the CBT one has any labs or material to practice?

Well i failed my exam today and must say it was much harder than i anticipated. Don't think anybody will pass the exam if you don't have a lot of hands on experience with the product and all its services.

This exam focus mainly on testing your knowledge designing HA solutions using most of the services available. Please don't make the mistake i made and think you know AWS by just watching the CBT Nugget series.

Here is a few tips that's still fresh in my head after the exam.

EC2:

  1. EBS backup, snapshots and restore options.

  2. What happens to EBS root volume if the instance terminates or stops?

  3. Migrate EC2 to another AZ. How?

  4. Auto Scaling configurations and groups. Important.

  5. What’s placement groups? And best way to make use it.

  6. ELB configurations and use cases.

  7. EBS encryption on data at rest? Is it possible?

  8. What happens when snapshot occurs? IO? Read / Writes?

  9. Can I attach a role account to a running instance?

  10. What happens to data stored in ephemeral storage when instance stopped or terminated?

  11. What can an application use to query the public/ private IP of an instance? Query the instance metadata?

  12. EC2 Instance Metadata Query Tool use cases.

  13. Can you use a reserved instance with auto scaling design?

S3:

  1. When is an object copy/ deleted successful? PUT / DELETE commands? Success result message.

  2. Server side Encryption option. Important.

  3. Permissions when intergrade with CloudFront.

CloudFront:

  1. Origin Access Identity. Important.

  2. Know the Configuration.

RDS:

  1. Multi-AZ deployment best practices.

  2. What happens to data reads / write when snapshot occurs? IO? Read / Writes?

  3. Primary and Standby deployments in multi-AZ. What happens when Primary fails?

DynamoDB:

  1. Configuration and play with it.

ElastiCache:

  1. Configuration and play with it.

VPC:

  1. Setup NAT instance and demo. Routing tables? Elastic IPs?

  2. Internet gateway configuration.

  3. Routing tables defaults?

  4. Can subnets talk to each other by default in VPC? Routing tables?

  5. Configure ACLS and security groups? Know defaults.

  6. Security groups. Inbound SSH rule enabled but outbound disabled? Does it work?

Route 53:

  1. Know all available types of DNS records.

IAM:

  1. What’s the first thing to do after creating a role to be used with API calls? Create Password? Created access keys?

  2. Identity providers? What is this?

  3. Know everything.

CloudWatch:

  1. Know default metrics for all services.

Elastic beanstalk:

  1. Know everything.

SQS:

  1. Know everything cause there is a lot of questions.

  2. Use cases for SQS is important.

SWF:

  1. Know everything cause there is a lot of questions.

  2. Use cases for SWF is important.

I passed the exam last month and I used ACloud Guru and Linux Academy.. I went the cheap route initially, but decided to PAY for ACG and LA because based on what my peers stated you CANNOT pass this exam without HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. So if you are serious about passing the exam then PAY for the two courses above and do a LOT OF LABS. When you feel you are comfortable to build a highly scalable, highly available website then you are ready for the exam.

You could probably buy the acloud.guru entire aws associate bundle (3 certs) for 29$ on stacksocial. another 10% for signing up. I can send a referral link for 10$ off as well (not sure).
